Under the manufacturers warranty, water damage is not covered.
They do offer something called Total Equipment Coverage (think insurance) where if you are subscribed to the service you can receive a replacement if you pay a deductible. The premium (ranging $6.99 to $10.99 a month depending on the device) has to already be on your account. The deductible ranges from $45 to $199 (also dependant on the model of phone). The replacement equipment normally is refurbished.
Verizon also sometimes (depending on the availability of refurbished units) will allow you to purchase one at a reduced cost.
Depending on how far in your contract you are they may extend you an early upgrade entirely to purchase a new phone.

The Verizon service does not cover water damage.
BUT, Wal-Mart has started covering both pre-pay phones and contract phones. The Wal-Mart insurance DOES cover water damage! Whether you dropped your phone in the toilet (you have to retrieve the phone) or you forgot your phone was in your pocket when you jumped into the lake, Wal-Mart will cover it!
For the contract phones (any contract phones you purchase from Wal-Mart and get the two year contract with a carrier), you will pay a deductible from $6 to $10 (depending on the phone) per month, with a deductible ranging from $35 to $199 (depending on the phone).
For pre-pay phones (ANY pre-pay phone you purchase from Wal-Mart), you can get insurance that covers the phone if ANYTHING (except lost or stolen) happens to the phone! The insurance cost starts at $4 for a phone that costs $40, and goes up to $39 for a phone that costs $200. This is a one time fee and you have peace of mind for a year and a half! (18 months.)
For example: Your husband is tired of the high monthly cost of your phone bill, takes your phone out and runs it over with his car. You call the insurance company, they will ask you questions off the receipt you got with the phone, then they will tell you to either throw the phone away, or mail it back to them. The next day, the insurance card you got with your phone (which has a debit card embedded in it), will be turned on. You take the debit card to Wal-Mart, and buy your new phone!
It is that easy!
Just so you know, I work in the Connection Center at a Wal-Mart store. I always recommend a person get the insurance for the pre-paid phones. It is so worth the cost!
