How to remove black mould using natural remedies. I have a small patch of black mould growing in the corner of a bedroom. There has been water damage in this area before, but never mould growing. How do I tackle this with natural remedies and keep it from coming back? |

When you say in the corner of the bedroom, are you talking about the sheet rock or the floor?
You will need to remove that sheet rock and see what's behind it or that section of the floor. You need a ventilation mask, eye protection and gloves to mess with this. Mist what you see that's mold with water before cutting into anything to prevent it going airborne. Wipe it off and dispose of the paper towels or rags in a garbage bag. Do NOT water it down. Then use bleach to treat it. There are products on the market specifically that can be used to treat this and are considered better than bleach. I really would suggest you use them. The price is worth your health. Replace the sheet rock and use a mold inhibiting paint on it. Then throw the sheet rock pieces, mask, gloves, and eye wear in the bag and tie it up carefully. Dispose of everything.

Mold likes to grow in damp area. If there is mold growing the first step is to locate the source of the water and stop it. It may be a roof leak, broken pipe, too much humidity, etc. Once you figure out where the moisture is comming from, repair the leak first.
After you have done this, you can begin cleaning up the area. First, make sure you put on a pair of gloves. A small area of mold will not need a dust mask or sheetrock removal like the other person advised. Those kinds of precautions are for severely affected areas with many square feet of mold. A small area like you have is not anything to be worried about. I have been doing mold remediation for years, and a small area approximately 2 feet by 2 feet is not going to be any danger.
Take some rags with bleach and clean up the entire area, including several feet past where the mold is. Let this area dry. You can then paint over this with a primer called Killz. It is made to cover mold areas and stop mold growth. After the primer you can paint using any paint you like.
The bleach will kill the mold and the primer will keep it from comming back. In an area that small, as long as you are not licking the mold, or have your face 5 inches from it, there should be no danger. People make a very big deal about the health effects of mold. The fact is that EVERY home has some sort of mold. Its a naturaly occuring fact of life. If small areas were so dangerous you needed to wear respirators and destroy your sheetrock to get clean, everybody would be dead by now.

Thanks GusKoltoukis, you've certainly put my mind at ease! The mould is located just below the ceiling. There's been quite a bit of rain over the last few months and I have been waiting for someone to come out and look at it. It's only a small patch, but I have been wondering if it would be harmful to my health. Good to know I won't drop dead from it!

I am sorry but I have to come back and disagree. If you had a leak and there is a small area of black mold showing, there's MUCH more behind that sheet rock. What's hidden can cause major problems and you need to know if there's more behind it where the leak started. If the leak came from ABOVE and drip drip on from the ceiling and you can SEE it..., that's a different story. Then I would agree with Gus. But if that leak was behind that wall, you need to get in there.
No, you aren't going to drop dead from it but it CAN affect your health. Respiratory problems and more can happen. The research is out there.

I have to agree with Melaniem41 as well.
Black Mould can be very very bad for your health, regardless of what the other person says. He is advising on what he has been doing, and not what he SHOULD be doing. Having a mask is probably the least you should have.
Remember there was a time when asbestos was considered safe, and there were plenty of people installing it without masks....
