Rent those shampoo/vacuum machine called "Rugdoctor", even supermarkets carry those, about $25.00/day rent but it cleans your carpet fast enough.... and real smell good too.

Yes, the rugdoctor does, steam cleaning, shampoo and it helps dry it faster, it is all-in-one machine, try it, it is worth the money!

Many years ago I invested in a Bissell Proheat 2x Steam Upright Carpet Cleaner. I bought it at Target for about $200. It does an excellent job of cleaning and I also bought two large bottles of carpet cleaners too.

It gets expensive renting those heavy carpet cleaning machines. Whereas if you own your own carpet cleaners, you can take your time and clean whenever you feel up to it. Make sure you vacumn the carpet and then watch your Bissell get out the dirt. Just fill the container with water and carpet cleaner, then turn on the two switches.

The dirty water can be poured right down a drain or emptied into your toilet. It is so convenient when you own your carpet cleaner.

If you're on a tight budget, renting a steam vacuum cleaner from the supermarket will work provided you buy the carpet shampoo and spot cleaning materials you need at the same time. Vacuum the rug before steam cleaning. You may want to check prices on buying rather than renting a home carpet cleaner since you have so much area that will likely need done at least twice a year. Over time, it would save you money.

Before you do all the work yourself, there are professionals you might want to ask who can give you a quote. Since the house would be empty, you may get a break on price since no furniture would have to be moved to clean the carpets. Generally, I find the pros do a better job even if it costs a little more. It does save you a lot of time and effort which you could be putting to good use packing and moving.

Congratulations on your new home!.That is going to be a lot of carpet to clean. Have you thought about hiring someone to do it for you? They can put commercial sanitizers and extract the water afterward, it will be dry in no time. A lot of companies should be having back to school specials very soon.
Renting a machine is another option but those machine are very heavy
Roomba has the robotic vacuum cleaners and hard surface mops but they have not come out with a carpet cleaner. Darn it! I love my Roombas. They are my choice for cleaning floors.
Lots of choices but I would recommend not using a steam cleaner as they will loosen the backing of the carpet. Depending on the materials in the carpet it can also cause warping. If you have wood floors under your carpet the steam can mess them up as well.
If you decide to do the job yourself take care not to use too much liquid cleaner and rinse very very well. Any soap left on the fibers will attract dirt like putting hairspray on before a dust storm.

You can buy a good bissel steam cleaner , for around 150$ , watch your sales
at target or sears online .
With that much carpet , its more convenient to own your own machime.

Clairebleu, if you're on a budget, consider letting the commercial cleaners come in and do the main part of the house and you do the remaining rooms with your purchased Bissell ProHeat CleanShot 2X upright carpet cleaner.

Usually, I get my carpet professionally cleaned and have scotchguard sprayed on it once a year. This is because we entertain friends and family during the year. However, in the meantime, I just use my Bissell Upright Proheat Cleanshot 2X for spills and quick stain cleanups.
