What's the best cat litter, in your experience?

I've tried many kinds, and find at least one major drawback to each of them. Has anyone found one they consider ideal?

So far, clay litters are super-heavy to carry up my stairs and either have a horrible artificial scent or don't do a good job of keeping the odor in the box for more than a day.

The natural pine or paper based litters have excellent odor control, but they track all over the apartment!

I only have one cat, but I'm in a small space. Any ideas?

Any good clumping litter and one of these... I can even get the kids to do the litter box.

The Omega roll and clean litter box. You roll it to the side once a day, it catches all the clumps in the pull out tray, roll it back, dump the tray, dispose and you're done.

The box is deep enough even my enthusiastic cat litter thrower doesn't manage to get much, if any, outside the box. I got the extra large size.

I find that the cheapest clumping cat litter then I add Baking Soda to help with the smell.

Answer 3/20 - Submitted 4/23/2010

I like this rolling litter box idea, and the baking soda, but I'm still kinda stuck.

What I'm looking for is a lightweight cat litter that doesn't track all over the apartment, and offers fairly good odor control.

I've seen those litters that look like white beads... some kind of silicone, I assume? If anyone has experience with those, I'd like to hear it.

Perhaps another kind of natural litter besides Yesterday's News and Feline Pine, if there is such a thing?

My favorite litter is fresh step, make sure it's not the multi cat formula. It has a fresh smell that lasts,& you can add to it many times before it has to be changed. Some cats don't like the covered litter boxes,my cat doesn't.

Answer 5/20 - Submitted 4/24/2010

Fresh step is the best that I have used. But that is just me.

Answer 6/20 - Submitted 4/25/2010

Fresh step has the odor-reducing quality, but is still a heavy clay litter.

I have to take a bus when I run errands, and it's hard to carry 20 pounds of clay home every other week, let alone up the stairs to my apartment.

Maybe what I'm looking for doesn't exist. Any inventors out there willing to take this on?

I think most litters get tracked a little. Do you have a litter trapper mat outside of the litter box? I use the soft rubberized stuff with the tiny holes (comes in rolls), where shelf liner paper is sold. It doesn't catch every little piece of litter, but it catches most of it. Pet stores also sell mats that will help to trap litter from the cat's paws.

The best cat litter i have found is the white, finely ground synthetic one. it is similar to the larger pearls but absorbs better. the urine gets absorbed and the stool sits on top and you just scoop it out and flush it. it may be difficult to find, but controls odour very well. i have 3 cats and they use the same litter box. just stir the litter after cleaning the stool from it. 1/2 bag lasts 10 to 14 days with 3 cats and the price is approx 35.00 for 15 lbs. hope this helps.

Shem858: Is there a brand name for the litter you are talking about?

So the fifteen pounds lasts you up to a month with three cats? Sweet, that would mean almost 3 months with my one cat!

I was thinking of ordering it online, then the delivery person would have to haul it up the stairs instead of me. :)

Answer 10/20 - Submitted 5/21/2010

It looks as if Shem858 is no longer checking in here. Does anyone else know of this product s/he was referring to? I can't seem to find it myself with Google or anything.

Tidy cat is my personal favorite, but if you do not care for perfumes, it's not for you. The only one I think might appeal to you would be corncob bedding. It is a natural product of rounded corncob pieces that would likely not stick to a cat's feet very easily. It is also very light weight and should have some natural odor controlling abilities. It is virtually dust free as well. Kaytee and Brown's makes this bedding. I've used it with very sensitive animals such as parrots and baby rabbits. It can be seen online.---PetCaretaker---To increase odor control you may want to put a shallow layer of another product in the base of the cat box and pour the corncob litter on top.

Answer 12/20 - Submitted 5/24/2010

I'm gonna try this corncob stuff when I get the chance. I like the idea of something that, if Bela does manage to lick if off his fur, won't clog up his digestive tract. Maybe I can combine that with the Yesterday's News or Feline Pine on the bottom. I'll keep this posted with my results when I try it.

Sounds like a good plan to me MIchelle V! I hope this will be a satisfactory solution for your kitty litter dilemma. Let us know how it is working for you. Best wishes!----PetCaretaker

I have found that World's Best Cat Litter is my favorite. It is an all natural corn formula, no clay. It is a little dusty, but I use a catch mat under the litter boxes. It is a clumping formula and comes in two types. One for single cat use and one for multiple cats. It is biodegradable in landfill and also flushable. I scoop the boxes once a day (I have 4 cats) and once or twice a week I will add a shake of Arm and Hammer Litterbox Deodorizer. If the box is scooped at least once a day, you just need to top it off with a small amount of fresh litter once a week (to replace all the clumps you take out) Occasionally one of my cats will come out with a fine dust on their paws or face, which is not harmful to them. Clay litters are notorious for clogging up respiratory tracts, especially in kittens. My mother always comments that she can't tell that we have cats, because she can't smell the litter boxes! I have a friend who is a Vet and she has switched over to this litter for her practice.

My cats go outside to go potty but i have been quite impressed with pellet litter...there is no odor no chemicals and easy to dispose of and best of all its cheap...it is used in many shelters due to its price and ability to manage multiple cats odors

Answer 16/20 - Submitted 6/4/2010

I use a luncern based pellet that is all natural and can be put on the garden as fertilizer after it is used. It lasts up to about 5 days before it crumbles too much, but if the cats do get it on their paws then they will tred it throughout the house. It is a natural lucern pellet that is sold at pet food produce shops for horses or chooks.

I always liked Tidy Cat , its large enough not to be tracked around like
clumping ones

Answer 18/20 - Submitted 6/5/2010

Nice - this World's Best Cat Litter sounds worth a try. It sounds similar to what Petcaretaker recommended, as it is also made of corn. Adding scoop-ability just makes it better.

I think I'll order it online. Then I won't have to carry heavy boxes home and up the stairs, which was one of the problems I was having with clay litter.

Answer 19/20 - Submitted 6/5/2010

First and foremost- litter that clumps!
I've tried several different types but found this at Walmart a few months ago and I'm pleased with it. It's not dusty and seems like "healthier" litter to me (it's like bark). It really kills the odor (and we have a small apartment so that's important)
Give it a try and there's even a coupon online!

Good luck!

Update: Tried the "World's Best" cat litter, and I have to say, it is most certainly NOT the world's best.

It stunk, literally. There seemed to be absolutely no odor control. Also, it left a powdery residue on my cat's paws that tracked all over my apartment!

I'll move on to the other suggestions. Keep them coming!
